  1. List three salient facts that you learned from your reading and viewing of the material above.

  2. Read the following diplomatic notes on submarine warfare: German threat to sink neutral shipping, German declaration of naval blockade, Tirpitz’s criticism of declaration, Bülow’s support of declaration, and Wilson’s response. What do the notes reveal about German indecision regarding submarine warfare? How does Wilson’s response play into German decision making?

  3. Read the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey’s thoughts on the Gallipoli campaign and those of British journalist Henry Nevinson. What can you learn from these accounts of the Gallipoli disaster?

  4. Go to website Turkey in the First World War website accessible in the right viewing pane of Vascik’s Great War. Open the Campaigns link and then choose Gallipoli. After reading through the article, post on something you have learned about the Turkish perspective on the battle.
  5. On my Great War blog, do a category search for the term “Submarine Warfare” and “Gallipoli.” Read the posts that come up. Comment on something from one of the posts that strikes you as interesting.
  6. After you have completed all the activities in this module, post to the “What I still have questions about” link. (You can find my responses to the questions from Module 5 here.)

Write a brief reflective essay on one of the following:

  • What did the new nations that entered the war in 1915 contribute? Were they prepared for the meat grinder of war?

  • What was Churchill up to with the assault on the Dardanelles? Was it at all practical and did it make strategic sense?

  • How did Gallipoli serve as a forge of national identity for Australians and Turks?
