We will be using three books in this class, in addition to material that I have placed for you on the Internet. Our textbook is Hew Strachan, The First World War. We will also be reading one novel, Erich Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front, and one book of primary documents, Annika Mombauer, The Origins of the First World War.
We will also be using short extracts from Jay Baird, To Die for Germany: Heroes in the Nazi Pantheon, Christopher Clark, Sleepwalkers, Modris Eksteins, Rites of Spring: The Great War and the Birth of the Modern Age, Paul Fussel, The Great War and Modern Memory, and Gary Sheffield, The Western Front Experience: 1914-1918 among others. (Sorry, but the list is constantly expanding!) I am currently working on incorporating these into a digital course pack so that we can respect copyrights.
